Health Canada

Dr. Barton-Maclaren joined the Existing Substances Risk Assessment Bureau (ESRAB) in 2007 following the completion of her Ph.D. in Reproductive Toxicology from McGill University. Early in her career she led various risk assessment files receiving recognition as a New Public Servant for her scientific contributions to the human health risk assessment of a high-profile substance. As Research Manager of the Emerging Approaches Unit since 2017, Dr. Barton-Maclaren serves as the focal point for the development of approaches and strategies integrating emerging data and novel (non-animal) methodologies for the assessment of chemicals existing in the Canadian marketplace.  She is active at the international level leading and contributing to initiatives aiming to replace, reduce and refine animal toxicity testing including efforts under the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Accelerating the Pace of Chemical Risk Assessment (APCRA).  Areas of focus and dynamic collaboration with thought leaders both nationally and internationally include computational toxicology, in vitro testing models, omics technologies and Integrated Approaches to Testing and Assessment (IATA) to accelerate the acceptance and implementation of advances in science for quantitative risk assessment. Dr. Barton-Maclaren is a leader in translational research bridging innovations in modern toxicology research and human health risk assessment for the protection of Canadians against the risks posed by chemicals. The impact of her efforts have been acknowledged by the Society of Toxicology of Canada V.E. Henderson Award in recognition of exceptional contribution to toxicology and the society.
