Exploring the Applicability of the OECD TG 249 Fish Cell Line Acute Toxicity Assay in Environmental Hazard and Risk Assessment of Cosmetic and Personal Care Product Ingredients.
Significant efforts are being made globally to advance the adoption of animal-free safety assessments. However, acute fish toxicity data are currently a component of environmental risk assessments and often a requirement in global chemical regulations. Thus, to minimize animal use while ensuring the environmental safety of chemicals and products, it is necessary to consider alternative methods for assessing acute fish toxicity that will provide robust and regulatory-compliant approaches. One alternative that has shown utility for assessing acute fish toxicity is the OECD 249 RTgill assay, a rainbow trout gill cytotoxicity assay.
